what remains
I began this series of drawings in 2016 with the intent of focusing on one subject matter, choosing skulls because they provide a wealth of history, symbolism and emotional associations to draw on. I started to explore the idea of physical remains as avatars for historical remains, the legacies we leave behind. Most of the skulls depicted here were chosen for the story that they represent – a legacy, positive or negative, that remains after the living being is gone. I treated the skulls abstractly and graphically in bright colors so as not to emphasize death, but hopefully to highlight those stories.
I believe this study of legacy ties into my own struggle as an artist, one that I believe I share with many artists – a concern about what my personal legacy will be when I am gone and how I will be remembered.
